Success Stories | 2022 Business Matchmaking Grant

Barya Kitchen — with Gourmand Group

Background

Barya Kitchen started as a pop-up in 2018 celebrating Chef Rod Reyes mom’s cooking. Over the year’s Barya Kitchen gained notoriety for it’s modern approach to Filipino food. Barya Kitchen would pop-up in festival’s like the UNDSCVRD Night Market or other restaurants like Hometown Heroes.

During the pandemic, Barya Kitchen bought a food truck to take their business to the next level. Due to permit delays, they never had a proper launch party to announce the evolution of the pop-up to a food truck.

Proposal

To celebrate making the move into the food truck game, Barya Kitchen proposed to the SEED Business Matchmaking Grant to produce 2 grant opening parties.

“4/08 in San Jose, hence the date, 408 area code and have everything on our menu priced at $4.08. This lower price point will be attractive to our already loyal customer and new customers that may be new to Filipino cuisine. We also think that the date and the idea behind this grand opening party will be good for marketing. We have two locations we have in mind to hold this party. 2. 4/15 in San Francisco, hence the date, 415 area code and have everything on our menu priced at $4.15.”

To help them make a big splash, they teamed up with the Gourmand Agency to help build a social media campaign, build press interest, develop high quality photographic content, and a new website.

“By hiring Gourmand Agency and having these two grand opening parties in the month of April we are hoping to generate $6000 from those two events. We also hope by having a website and being able to acquire email addresses and ZIP codes that we can have a better idea of where our customer base is in.”

Results

Barya Kitchen initially proposed generating $6,000 from their opening parties.

In actuality, they generated $9,133.73 — a 2.3x ROI from the grants initial investment.

Thanks to our funder, the Wells Fargo Foundation, Barya Kitchen is on the right track for growth.
